Ten Underrated One Direction Songs

Publish date: 2024-07-24

As we all know, One Direction has a huge discography. They have over seventy songs, which is a lot. Sadly, not all of them are given the recognition they deserve. If it’s not released as a single, typically it won’t get much attention outside of the fandom.

While One Direction has had some amazing singles (well, all of them have been great really), there are some songs that really do deserve to have the spotlight as well.

Here are ten of the many underrated songs One Direction has.

  • Better Than Words
  • More than a feeling, crazy in love… Dancing on the ceiling.

Have you ever wondered how this song came to be? Well, it’s quite interesting. Liam came up with the idea to use titles of other songs for lyrics, and bam, Better Than Words came to be. Other than the bridge, every single lyric is the title from another song. It’s a very unique way of creating a show, which is why this song made it on the list. It’s also very catchy, though what One Direction song isn’t?

  • Half a Heart
  • I’m half a man at best, with half an arrow in my chest… Cause I miss everything we do, I’m half a heart without you.

This song is loved by practically every Directioner. The lyrics are sweet, but also heartbreaking. If you’re in the mood to cry, then this song is definitely for you. It’s about losing someone, and after that… you’re just half the person you were, because they were half of you. Relatable, isn’t it? The boys always seem to put our feelings into words.

  • Truly, Madly, Deeply
  • I hope I’m not a casualty, hope you won’t get up and leave… Might not mean that much to you, but to me… it’s everything.

If you didn’t get the Target version of One Direction’s Take Me Home album, you weren’t blessed with this masterpiece (though I’m sure you have it by now). Truly, Madly, Deeply is a slower-paced song, the boys’ voices accompanied by a soft guitar. It’s a great song to fall asleep too – it’s peaceful and lovely.

  • Spaces
  • Who’s gonna be the first to say goodbye?

This song was making everyone emotional in March, when a certain someone left the band. It was almost our anthem of sadness. The song is all about growing apart from someone, and just like most of their underrated songs, it’s a sad one. If you look past the emotional damage it’ll probably give you, their vocal ranges are showed beautifully for this song. It’s another relatable one too, because we all know that one person we slowly separated from.

  • I Should’ve Kissed You
  • I’m so sorry, I’m so confused… Just tell me, am I out of time?

Okay, so you might not know about this one… because I didn’t, and I consider myself a hardcore fan (because I am one). It was released on the b-side of their single One Thing. The version available on YouTube doesn’t have the highest of quality, but that doesn’t stop it from being wonderful. Anyways, this is all about regretting to take that kiss. It has a very pop feel to it, as it is off their first album technically.

If you haven’t heard this, you might’ve not heard Another World. It didn’t make the list, but I’d YouTube that one. It’s good.

  • Tell Me A Lie
  • If he’s the reason that you’re leaving me tonight, spare me what you think and… tell me a lie.

This is all about not wanting to know the truth, and we’ve all been there. We know the truth of something, but we rather hear something else. Once again, One Direction brings us something we can all feel with. While the tune is more upbeat, the lyrics are fantastic. It’s one of those songs that lacks a Louis or Niall solo, but other than that, it’s very good.

  • Right Now
  • You know I can’t fight the feeling, and every night I feel it… Right now, I wish you were here with me.

If you’re a Zayn fan, then you probably love this song. There is some amazing vocal work from him, and it’s absolutely excellent. This song is interpreted in a few ways – possibly a long distance relationship, their touring life. Either way, the lyrics are simple, but they still work perfectly together.

  • Once In A Lifetime
  • When I close my eyes, all the stars align… And you are by my side, you are by my side.

I could see someone dancing to this at their wedding. Once again a slower song, it’s all about loving someone. It’s not particularly sad, thankfully. It’s very sweet, and if you like a good love song, this is for you. The boys show off their voice capabilities through this song, and it’s just calming to listen to.

  • Irresistable
  • Don’t try to make me stay, or ask if I’m okay… I don’t have the answer.

This is another one off of One Direction’s Take Me Home special edition from Target. Another one with a soft guitar playing in the background, it’s peaceful, and takes you away from the typical pop sound. Like I’ve claimed with the other songs, it’s relatable – uncertainty about a relationship. Do you stay, or do you go? It’s hard to have an answer, and the boys sing about just that. There are also some great vocal riffs, which you don’t want to miss.

  • Something Great
  • You’re all I want, so much it’s hurting… You’re all I want, so much it’s hurting.

This is about missing someone, and having someone you can’t have. A few people have tied this to the ship Larry Stylinson, due to Harry Styles being the writer. Either way, the song has beautiful vocals, especially from Louis. His solo at the end really pieces the entire song together, and I wouldn’t have wanted any of the other boys singing it. Louis did a beautiful job.

    Bonus: Perfect

And if you like cameras flashing every time we go out, oh yeah… And if you’re looking for someone to write your breakup songs about, baby I’m perfect… Baby, we’re perfect.

This is a single, and it’s entirely new, but I wanted to include it. I think this song is absolutely perfect (ha), just because of how genuine it is. Apart from the fact Louis and Harry wrote it together, the song really brings in points about how the boys have to live. They have to deal with those constant cameras flashing, as well as sneaking around just to avoid them. It’s a great upbeat song, but if you really think about it, it’s heartbreaking. They don’t have the easiest lifestyle. Oh, but Louis starts the song off. How great is that?
