Dev Patel is a British actor. He is known for his roles in the films Slumdog Millionaire (2008), The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2012), and Lion (2016), among others.

Dev was born in Brent, London, England, to Anita and Raj, parents from a Gujarati Indian Hindu background. His parents are from Nairobi, Kenya, and moved to England in their teens, where they met each other. His ancestors are from Jamnagar and Unjha in Gujarat.

Dev and Lucas Hedges are the first males born in the 1990s to have been nominated for an Academy Award for acting (both were nominated for Best Supporting Actor for 2016 films, Dev for Lion and Lucas for Manchester by the Sea). Timothée Chalamet is the first person born in the decade to have been nominated for Best Actor, in 2017.
