Börje Salming was born on April 17, 1951, in the village of Salmi in what is now Kiruna Municipality, Sweden. His father, Erland, was of Sami origin, while his mother, Karin, was Swedish.

Tragically, Salming’s father passed away in a mining accident when he was just 5 years old. He grew up alongside his older brother, Stig Salming, who also played hockey and became a successful player for Brynäs IF.

Salming called himself an indigenous Sámi and was included in the electoral roll for Sametinget. He embraced his Sámi heritage and often wore a traditional Sami pewter bracelet to reflect his roots.

Salming began his hockey journey in his hometown, starting to skate at 6 in the Matojärvi hall. He also played handball during childhood, showcasing his athletic abilities from a young age.

Personal Life

During his early career with the Toronto Maple Leafs, salming was married to Margitta Salming, a children’s wear designer.

They had two children together, Theresa and Anders. However, the couple later divorced. In 2016, Salming married Pia Salming.

They have two children, Rasmus and Bianca. Bianca Salming has followed in her father’s footsteps and is a heptathlete.

Career

Salming’s professional career began in Sweden, where he played for Brynäs IF in the top division. He helped lead the team to league championships in 1971 and 1972.

In 1973, Salming caught the attention of Toronto Maple Leafs scout Gerry McNamara, who signed him as a free agent.

Upon joining the Maple Leafs, Salming quickly made his mark in the NHL. He broke the stereotype that European players were too soft for the physical North American style of play.

Salming’s strong performances earned him a reputation as a skilled and tough player. He played 16 seasons with the Maple Leafs, becoming a fan favourite and setting numerous records for the team.

Salming’s number 21 jersey was retired by the Maple Leafs in 2016.

Salming also represented Sweden internationally, playing for the national team in various tournaments, including the World Championships, Canada Cups, and the 1992 Winter Olympics.

He won silver and bronze at the World Championships, significantly contributing to the Swedish team’s success.

Death

On November 24, 2022, Börje Salming passed away at 71 in Nacka, Sweden.

His death came after a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), which he was diagnosed with in July 2022.

Salming’s passing was mourned by fans and the hockey community, who recognized his contributions to the sport.
